WeAreSafeAndSound.com, is a nationwide emergency and disaster communications service available for complimentary usage by the general public.

In between my client work, and personal life, I find the time to focus on providing the general public with common services to help increase productivity within their lives. The current project, WeAreSafeAndSound.com, is a nationwide emergency and disaster communications service available for complimentary usage by the general public.

Individuals and families are encouraged to proactively register and educate themselves about the importance of preventive emergency and disaster planning. Once registered, they are assigned a username and password, and a voicemail box extension. It is recommended that all family members or close group of friends share accounts so that communications can be centralized. In the event of a man-made or natural disaster, individuals can call their voicemail box via a toll-free number and leave a Safe&Sound message.

People associated with the account call the same toll-free number, provide proper identification/user account credentials, to listen to messages. If one has internet access, they can register themselves as Safe&Sound and notify anyone else tied to their account via email. In addition, the general public can search the database and be informed of individuals identifying themselves as Safe&Sound.

In addition, our staff travels to major emergency or disaster sites to assist in providing communication services via satellite phones and laptops with satellite internet access.

To find out more about the WeAreSafeAndSound.com service and how you can join and receive a FREE ACCOUNT for you and your family today, please try the demo.

Not too long ago, well about 6 months ago, a friend of a friend contacted my company, Brownstone Strategies, in regards to getting advice about a site he wanted to build for his company, Liberty National Appraisals Management Company. Our initial conversing discussed everything from design, content, and purpose of the site to hosting and how to best utilize the site to efficiently operate his appraisal company.

Little did we know at the time that of our initial conversing, his true reasoning for building the site was more out of fear and compliance to the US Government’s Home Valuation Code of Conduct as of May 1, 2009. Long story short, we released a very good looking, comprehensive, and functioning online business application to allow his company to comply and accept appraisals online and then redistribute those appraisals to qualified and certified appraisers nationwide. The redistribution of the appraisals occurs based upon the home state and county of the appraisal and appraiser. We utilized PHP and MySQL databases to capture all information as well as the FPDF library to produce on-demand pdfs of appraisals. Although the site is mostly tables, we utilized CSS to address the styling of the site. Using Google Analytics, we’re able to track the obvious web results, but at the same time were able to track how appraisers are utilizing the system — their section is locked down and not visible to the general public. There are definitely many more features that we are currently adding and will add going forward to generate leads — homeowners utilizing the system and appraisers signing up to utilize the system and make more revenue. At some point, there will be a need to even monetize the site more with advertising and newsletter subscriptions.

Overall, this was a great project and we did learn some great tricks and tips along the way in regards to the changing landscape of the mortgage and real estate industries. Cheers to Liberty National Appraisals and we wish them much success!

Tools Utilized: PHP, MySQL, Photoshop, CSS, Java/Javascript, FPDF, Google Analytics, PayPal API

This past weekend I attended my first ever BarCamp here in Austin, and what an amazing experience it was for me. BarCampIVAustin, a part of the SXSW Interactive venue, is geared towards bringing together individuals from various backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, and allowing for great synergies and collaboration. In a sense, it was like a ‘show and tell’ of businesses and business ideas, but with a much more engaging platform to “group brainstorm”. I definitely walked away from this experience with many ideas for my businesses and clients.

How It Worked
So from 10AM – 9pm, there was a wall with paper taped to it. On the paper were 15 and 30 minute timeslots for 4 different rooms across the time. There was no agenda besides persons taking stick notes (as show below) and filling in time slots with subjects they wanted to present or know more about. Each person(s) would present and would interact with the viewing/participating audience. Some great sessions were presented today. From how to find a job to how to network to how to a business setup shop in 21 days! I myself didn’t participate just due to the fact that I needed to learn the ropes as a ‘rookie’. But you better believe I’ll be back and ready to present next year!

Some of the notable companies presenting that I was impressed with were:

BridgeATX
www.bridgeatx.com
A Career Placement and Resource Networking Company.

OrgSync
www.orgsync.com
Collaborative Software for an Online Campus.

PeopleBrowsr
www.peoplebrowsr.com
Simple visual dashboard that adds more power to Twitter, your other online identities and those of your friends.

However, one of the most intriguing presentations that I was totally engaged with was the presentation put on by a group out of Portland, Oregon. I was just about to leave for the day when on the board I saw “Bac’n, How We Went From Nothing To Startup In 21 Days”. This intrigued me as I’m currently starting yet another business. And low and behold, right before it was time for the company to present, two of their presenters happened to be sitting at our table. And so I began inquiring about their company and how they did it. They didn’t want to tell me too much because they were about to go up and wanted me to stay to hear the entire presentation…. And this I”m glad about!

So, B-A-C-N-dot-com. Yes, they setup a company in 21 days to sell BACON. Out of all products to sell… BACON! So what is all the excitement about. I think I was more so intrigued, excited just due to going through the start up phase myself. I gleaned some very useful information in regards to the systems, communications, and shipping/logistics side of life. These guys really put together a very nice site and business model…. www.bacn.com! You can also visit Jason “Alvin” Glaspey’s website at www.jasonglaspey.com

I’ll be ready to present my business next year!
